Course summary

This specialist course is designed for ST3-ST6 surgical trainees who are keen to broaden their experience in hand and wrist trauma as well as orthopaedic techniques.

This course is facilitated by Mr Naeil Lotfi, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and delivered by a faculty of senior hand and wrist consultants from The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The course will be split across two days, offering practical insights, case-based discussions, and hands-on exposure to enhance confidence and surgical skills in this challenging subspecialty. 

  • A comprehensive 2 day course to include:
    • Plastic Hand Surgery Day
    • Orthopaedic Hand Surgery Day
  • Consultant led faculty with low faculty to participant ratio
  • Pre-course material provided for preparation 
  • Small group theory and hands on practical stations
  • Opportunity for work-based assessment completion

Course Facilitators

The course facilitator is Mr Naeil Lotfi, a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hand surgery. He is an engaging teacher and has published a wide range of research.

Plastic Hand Surgery Day:

  • Nerve injuries, examination, management
  • Introduction to micro instruments
  • Tendon injuries, examination, management 
  • Tendon repair with porcine and synthetic tendon
  • Soft tissue injuries and reconstructive ladder discussion

Orthopaedic Hand Surgery Day:

  • Fractures of the hand & wrist, examination, management
  • Fracture fixation station with saw bone
  • Degenerative and inflammatory arthritides of the hand
  • Management of elective conditions such as stenosing tenosynovitis
  • Injection practical station with synthetic 3D printed models
